I write when I have something to say, about things relevant to my life, as well as to the cycles, seasons and the Sacred Circle of life.
How many of you follow the equinoxes and seasons, the cycles of the Sun as well as the Moon?
June 21st is Summer Solstice and it is a time to celebrate the summer, the longest day of the year. Summer has just begun and especially since we live in Northern climate, we try to make the most of this season. I enjoy the changing seasons, the long summer days and yes, even the long winter nights.
When I lived in Northern Alberta, the summer days and winter nights were even longer. In summer, at 11 pm, it was still light out. It was great as a child to be able to play all day long.
Now the sun wakes me up earlier every day, but that is already changing... after tomorrow the days will start getting shorter again. I never understood how that worked... summer is only beginning and the days are getting shorter???
But nonetheless it is how is it. And I plan to enjoy as much of the good weather as possible. I am even getting used to the high humidity here... sort of....
For now, I welcome the solstice with prayer and ritual. To our Ancestors the changing seasons had much more relevance, life was about survival at all times of year. The summer was the time to hunt, plant, to get outside, to travel and prepare for winter.
These days with the depleting ozone the sun is harsher, so wear a hat, sunscreen and gauge your time under its rays. I find that I burn much faster than I used to in my youth. Those of my generation will notice the difference from 20-30 years ago. In the past I could go outside hatless with no sun screen for hours on end Now it less than half an hour I feel my skin sizzling. But that doesn't stop me from enjoying the good weather.
The Ottawa region is great for summer activities, I plan to explore more of the hiking trails and the Gatineau hills across the river, maybe go of a riverboat ride.
This weekend is a Shamanic Workshop with our community, a time to gather and dream together.
On July 1st most people will be heading for the country. So that weekend there will be no Circle.
HAPPY SOLSTICE and HAPPY SUMMER EVERYONE!!
